Faisal Fulfills Childhood Dream as First Masdar PhD Graduate

Faisal Al Marzooqi recently fulfilled a childhood dream when he became the first student to receive a PhD from the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology.

And now he’s ready to embark on a new dream: to help put the UAE on the map as a global leader in research.

The 29-year-old Emirati said: “It’s a high priority of the UAE’s Vision 2021 to build a knowledge-based economy, and for that we need to encourage students in school to think more seriously about going into research.”

Faisal earned his doctorate for his cutting-edge research into improving the efficiency of water desalination using nanotechnology.

He was driven by a desire to find solutions for one of the UAE’s biggest future energy challenges, and was inspired by the words of Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, who has said that “water is more important than oil for the UAE”.
