In a couple of months’ time, Abu Dhabi will host its own version of Comic Con.

Asia Pop Comic Con — Abu Dhabi, to give it its proper title, will be a three-day festival of popmania — anything that’s cinematic, or related to pop culture, licensing, and movie screening, comic books and cosplays.

Hosted by Universal Events, a subsidiary of Al Ahli Holding Group (AAHG), it’s the type of large-scale event that could help to fill the void in the city’s annual calendar vacated by the film festival.

For a company that has its foundations in construction and doing “anything that will get you dirty”, it’s a long way from there to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. But that’s the world that Al Ahli Holding now regularly finds itself surrounded by, as it did in April this year through another subsidiary, Comicave Studios.

The Singapore-based division of the group specialises in conceptualising, designing and manufacturing high-end collectibles and mass market toys, with a focus on pop culture.

And at the red carpet premiere of Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ in Los Angeles, Comicave Studios unveiled its Hulkbuster and Iron Man collectibles from the Super Alloy collection at the star-studded gala event, attended by Robert Downey Jr and the rest of the film’s line-up.

“We merged for the first time collectibles business with animatronics. The response from the cast and the fans was amazing,” Mohammad Khammas (pictured below), CEO of AAHG says.
