Ramadan in Iraq is so sweet. Literally, it’s all about the sweets.

Tuesday marked the first day of Ramadan for many here, and Iraqis scrambled to purchase their favorite treats as the daylong fast came to an end.

Empty streets suddenly became congested. There was a rush for local juice shops and sweets vendors and fruit stands to pick up last-minute items. After going hours without food and water, people’s tempers seemed almost ready to flare in the final moments before iftar, the meal that officially breaks the fast.
