Qatar is home to dozens of world records, including world’s longest thank-you letter to a ruler, biggest squash racket and most recently, world’s largest draped flag.

Next week, the country hopes to also break the Guinness World Record for most clothes gathered for charity in 24 hours.

The current record is 12.5 tons, achieved in Hanoi, Vietnam last year. Qatar Charity aims to smash that by collecting 14 tons (in two 20-foot containers) of clothes between April 26th and April 27th.

It plans to send what is collected to the Philippines, the Central African Republic and Yemen. According to a Qatar Charity representative who spoke to Doha News, Asian, Arab and African nations were chosen so that everyone would share and participate in the event.

The collection drive starts at 5pm at the Aspire Zone, where the charity will work with Qatar-based youth group Mission20 to collect, process and pack clothes donated into containers.

Speaking to Doha News, a Mission20 member said: “By going for the world record, it creates competition, but for a good cause. Maybe by seeing Qatar, other countries will also get interested.”
