Nez Gebreel, CEO of Dubai Design and Fashion council: Leading the way in 2016

The design sector has emerged on the international radar as an industry of growing importance, a vital source of job creation and a key contributor to economic development, estimated at $2.3tr globally. Across the Middle East and North Africa, we are seeing a mirroring of this appetite for creativity coupled with commercial value. In the region, design has always played a two-fold role by preserving and reflecting the rich cultural heritage of its people, and at the same time fueling progress and innovation in communities.

Findings recently released through the ground-breaking MENA Design Outlook 2015 Report, a comprehensive analysis of the MENA design market commissioned by the Dubai Design and Fashion Council (DDFC), offer insights into the opportunities that lie ahead for the industry in the region. The MENA design sector is on an impressive trajectory and has already achieved a significant market value of $100bn, growing at 7.4 percent annually, more than double the pace of the global industry over the last four years. The sector’s growth is expected to continue outperforming the global design industry and by 2019, its contribution to the global design sector will reach 5.2 percent. The largest design market in the region with $27.6bn in design revenues, the UAE stands at the cusp of an exciting new journey as it makes significant strides towards building a dedicated design-centric ecosystem.
