Diego Maradona will be taking his legendary status to the Middle East this September coaching Dubai-based club Al Wasl. The former Argentinian coach signed a two-year contract with the domestic club starting next season.

According to a statement from the club, “Al Wasl can confirm soliciting the services of one of the greatest footballers of all time.”

Al Wasl is fourth in the UAE football league, and has been looking for a coach to replace Sergio Farias who was fired in March. The club was also crowned Gulf Champions last year.

“This partnership embodies the vision of the club as it embraces forward thinking developments in the region to establish unprecedented standards for the sport,” Al Wasl vice chairman Marwan Bin Bayat said in a statement.

The former Argentine player led the national team to victory in the 1986 World Cup with a memorable performance including the “Hand of God” goal. He was also head coach from 2008 to 2010.

However, Maradona has been out of coaching since Argentina’s disappointing exit at last year’s World Cup in South Africa, losing his job as manager after they lost 4-0 to Germany in the quarter-finals.

Details of Maradona’s contract will be revealed during a press conference expected to be held during the first of week of June with Maradona present.
