“Change cannot happen overnight,” said President Barack Obama in Cairo on June 4, 2009 as he addressed the Muslim world (wherever that is) in what was regarded as a historical speech and a monumental change from Bush diplomacy. One year later, he is facing criticism of unaccomplished goals, unfulfilled promises and a reversion back to a policy of full throttle support for the state of Israel.

I traveled to Washington, DC with a group of Arab and Muslim Americans from Brooklyn. The sixty of us joined more than 200,000 others marching for a path to citizenship, an end to deportations and the breaking up of families, and an insistence that all people, no matter their legal status, be treated like human beings. We walked with Latino and Mexican groups, West African immigrants, and even an organization of Polish Americans.

When violence broke out between the Uyghur and the Han Chinese last year, China went on a PR campaign to ensure that their strategic partnerships with the Middle East don’t suffer. The world quickly learned that when Arab countries claim to push for the rights of their Muslim brothers and sisters, they only really mean their Arab-Muslim brothers and sisters. China was able to keep a fire from starting (wouldn’t want to ruin those oil deals!) as the Middle East remained fairly quiet about the whole ordeal. Now, China and the Middle East are about to get a whole lot closer than they already were.

During the 2010 U.S.-Islamic World Forum, which took place in Doha, Qatar from February 13th to the 15th, President Obama announced the appointment of Rashad Hussain as special envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC). And so at the end of the conference, all was well with the world. The Muslim community was happy, as the appointment reaffirmed the President’s commitment to continuing dialogue and reaching out to the Muslim world. Everyone else was put at ease since Hussain’s record of speaking out against violent extremism demonstrated that moderate Muslims do exist.
It has been nearly one year since Israel’s 22-day attack on Gaza last December-January. More than 1,400 Palestinians died in the siege, including hundreds of children, and the neighborhoods of Gaza were left in ravages. It was an atrocity of epic proportions, but at least one good thing has come of it. For the first time since Israel’s founding, we are hearing mainstream criticism of its policies and increased action from Palestine solidarity activists.

Well, at least there’s one Muslim that Washington insiders seem to like. Representative Keith Ellison, a Democratic Congressman from Minnesota and a Muslim, was voted the fourth most “admired” member of the House of Representatives by his fellow politicians. The survey, published by the National Journal, is an annual tradition on Capitol Hill, sort of like being voted prom king at the end of senior year. So what if Ellison actually tied for fourth (with fellow Democrats Barney Frank, John Lewis and Henry Waxman)? He’s still the Congressional prom king in my eyes.

The aftermath of Fort Hood was really disheartening for me, not just because of the media’s reaction (like the article by people like NYU Professor Tunku Varadarajan saying that all Muslims are violent like Major Hasan, and that we are all just suppressing it until the time when we too, will “go Muslim” - as in “go postal.") What was even more disheartening to me was the reaction from Arab and Muslim organizations. I felt their tone was apologetic. And my question is, why do we have to represent this man, and why do we have to apologize for his actions? We wrote press releases labeling Hasan as “crazy” and assuring the country, “don’t worry America, we’re nothing like that ... we are good Muslims.” As Ali Eteraz says, instead of apologizing, we should be giving the finger to anyone who expects us to.

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, rejected President Obama’s demand to halt settlement activity in East Jerusalem, a predominately Arab neighborhood, in the hopes of renewing peace talks. Netanyahu defended his plans to continue the development of a new housing project saying, “We cannot accept the idea that Jews will not have the right to live and purchase in all parts of Jerusalem.”

Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will never hurt you ... unless you’re China. On Tuesday, a Chinese editorial demanded that Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, rescind a remark accusing the country of committing genocide against the Uyghurs, a Muslim minority. The accusation was made in light of the riots occurring in the capital of the autonomous Xinjiang region, Urumqi, where approximately 184 people were killed.

Let me remind you of an episode that happened a while back. On December 13, 2003, Saddam Hussein was captured by Delta Force soldiers on a farm near Tikrit. He was found in a spider hole--military lingo for a small, underground, one-man hole--dug eight feet deep, crouched on his knees, carrying an unloaded pistol. Yes, unloaded. At the time, it was the latest defensive strategy of all major world leaders. Since then, they’ve decided to go the loaded route because they like that it actually protects them.

With the June 20th interview with Pakistan’s Dawn newspaper, President Obama became the first US President to speak directly with a Pakistani media outlet while still in office. The occasion marks a huge shift from previous administrations in dealing with the Muslim world. When Obama talked about a new kind of dialogue with Muslims, it’s nice to know that talking directly to one of the most important Muslim countries in the world was on his radar. All in all, this is definitely a positive first step to placing the Muslim community on an equal level of conversation.
