Have you ever sat down and wondered what the other 1.57 billion Muslims in the world are doing this Ramadan? Where are they? Well, nestled amidst the mountainous backbone of South America, you will find Bogota, Colombia… and yes, they have Muslims! This city has its own mini-Ummah, which is growing leaps and bounds, day by day. With three mosques and one Islamic Cultural Center, one can seek out members of the growing population and the community they have established.

If you are ever lucky enough to go to a Middle Eastern wedding, or Middle Eastern themed wedding that white people are finding popular these days (to show their pro-Mid East solidarity, of course) you are going to have to dance. Dance you say? Yes, dance I said! Dance like Travolta did on a lit floor with a crowd cheering you on. You see, an Arab wedding is like a rave without the drugs… sometimes (well, only if you have the right crowd).

Does your smoking friend use a cigarette in place of a date to open fasts? Do they start to twitch and get angry while fasting? We know it’s hard to quit an old habit, and smoking is the worst. There are many techniques in aiding people to stop but some times those patches and gums just don’t cut it. During Ramadan, smoking is prohibited during the hours of the fast, which can last up to 17 hours. For a smoker, that’s way too long to go without touching their pack and lighter. So we suggest an old school method, but an effective one, go cold turkey. That’s right. We said it, don’t touch that ciggie. Use Ramadan to get focused and get passed your addiction.

In reaction to the global uproar surrounding Facebook’s recent allowance of a “Prophet Muhammad Cartoon Day”, several Muslims have formed an offshoot of the popular social networking site aimed at providing Muslims and “Peaceful people from other religions” with a virtual “safe space” in which to network. MillatFacebook.com seeks to provide all the functions of Facebook - minus the massive inventory of apps/games, and of course, minus the religious insensitivity. As the founders put it: “The objective is to provide a platform for all Muslims and nice, decent and sophisticated people of all religions and faiths, to come together and make a network. They should interact in a way that is socially responsible by providing them all the freedom of expression, however respecting each others’ sentiments, sensitivities and beliefs.”

The situation started when Anelka, after a poor initial performance, was benched for the second half of Thursday’s Mexico-France matchup. He did not react well to this benching, supposedly embarking upon a profanity-laced tirade against his coach. No, I’m not talking about Woodstock or Lilith Fair or the latest tweeny Disney extravaganza concert (or some other generic music festival that’s either dating me or showcasing my horrific knowledge about music). The above stats are for Takin It to the Streets, a Muslim-led arts and entertainment festival taking place at Marquette Park in Chicago this weekend. And here’s why.

For the past 7 years, the NYC Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs (OIA) has encouraged organizations to host events for a week-long series celebrating immigrant culture, heritage and history in all 5 boroughs. NYC is lucky enough to be one of the most diverse cities in the world and Immigrant Heritage Week is a reflection of a majority of the cultural groups that make up its fabric.

We’ve all seen the Oprah segments on fat Americans and ways that they are trying to get healthy.
It is a strange thing to be a naturally light-skinned Arab. People praise you for your paleness as if you’ve done something wonderful just by being born with it. When I spent a summer in Egypt visiting my family, my older aunties badgered me about how much time I spent in the sun. They were worried that I wouldn’t maintain my white skin, as if the browner I got, the less attractive I got. But to me, this is a disturbing phenomenon - why is it that brown people are so obsessed with whiteness?

Numbers and statistics sometimes have the ability to numb me. When I read a body count - let’s say the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who have died since the U.S-led invasion began in 2003 - I can mentally register the tragedy of it, but it’s hard to feel the emotional outrage of such an impersonal figure. This is precisely the numbing effect that one Iraqi artist wanted to address in a piece of “interactive art” performed in front of a live audience in New York City in early March.

Since we already know that Muslims were green before it was cool, it’s nice to learn that we are still continuing the tradition of being environmentally friendly. Young Muslims everywhere are participating in the worldwide movement to save the planet. Some do their part by recycling, some work together to educate their communities about the environment and others have launched environmentally-friendly businesses inspired by their faith. One Muslim couple in particular has combined environmental consciousness with sleek, modern design to create contemporary Islamic art and a company with a cause.

Dining in the Middle East is pretty much an event of epic proportions with only the finest foods and beverages served to honor guests. However, maneuvering through an entire meal in a culture that is as mysterious as it is rich can be a heart-pounding affair. There are so many considerations regarding etiquette that you must take note of before you even take that first bite! So what’s an iPhone-toting, Facebook-friending, serial Google-r traveler to do? Why turn to Wikipedia of course!

Free mixing between the sexes is taboo where I live in Kuwait, as it is in most of the Middle East. And dating is categorically unacceptable - just ask this British couple in Dubai, who were caught kissing in public and now face a 30-day jail sentence . At times, dating in Kuwait can seem like a police chase gone heinously wrong. Boys with spiky hairstyles ride around Gulf Road peering into car windows as they pass. Once they spot a vivacious vixen, they often follow her while imploring for her to roll down the window to chat through the traffic light. Brings new meaning to speed dating, right? Some girls will brazenly toss pieces of paper with their phone numbers into the guy’s window. Others will roll their eyes and drive on.

I envisioned myself in a tent raising camels for the rest of my life. It’s sad to say that the stereotypes prevalent in the US media, even then, had saturated my judgment. The mere idea of hopping on a plane and migrating to one of the most tumultuous regions of the world sent a cold chill down my spine.
Amidst the flurry of news reports yesterday that a group of American “extremists” were plotting terrorism on American soil, I felt that familiar rise of fear (of what might happen if such a group is not caught), disbelief (that such groups still abound), and shame (that the group would likely be made up of Muslims). That perfect storm of emotions was partially quelled by the unexpected mixture of (secret) relief: the terrorists were not Muslim.
