Shahrukh Khan’s newest Bollywood film, “My Name Is Khan” has been lauded by many as a cinematic gift to Muslims all over the world. The film follows the Asperger’s afflicted protagonist Rizwan Khan as he struggles to find his way through a pre and post 911 America. Many Islamic organizations have lavished the film with praise for breaking down barriers and showing Muslims in a positive light. For that reason, the movie is undoubtedly a Bollywood landmark as most Bollywood films revolve around couples trying to get married for three hours.

And so at the end of the conference, all was well with the world. The Muslim community was happy, as the appointment reaffirmed the President’s commitment to continuing dialogue and reaching out to the Muslim world. Everyone else was put at ease since Hussain’s record of speaking out against violent extremism demonstrated that moderate Muslims do exist. I think all those stereotypes of Muslims as desert-dwellers must have infiltrated my brain, because my first thought was actually: “What the heck are those Muslims doing competing in the snow?!” But of course Muslims live all over the world - near mountains and rivers and plains (we really are everywhere.
After September 11th, when the rest of America discovered the existence of Muslims in their midst (we actually did live here before that, I assure you), there was of course an increase in the representation of our people in American pop culture. We Muslim-Americans, an immensely diverse group of people, were suddenly cast as one single entity - and a scary one at that. Just think of every Harrison Ford movie you’ve ever seen (Star Wars excepted of course. I don’t want one of you Star Wars freaks to come after me with a light saber). Or head over to the “Islam” section at your local bookstore. The book titles are enough to send even me running in fear.

Or maybe I can’t smell anything because it’s freakin’ freezing here. Anyway - something to melt the wintry cold is the heartwarming rituals and melted chocolate of Valentine’s Day. And how will single Muslims be spending it?

I woke up Sunday morning to the sounds of car horns blaring and crowds chanting. In New York, this is not uncommon and on any ordinary Sunday, it is more than a little annoying. But on this Sunday, January 31, this was the sweet sound of victory. And no, I’m not talking about the Jets either. Egypt had won the Africa Cup for the third straight year in a row.

The Emirates are known for their larger than life buildings and excessive lifestyle, but they’re also big on preserving Arab culture through educational, foundational and award-based initiatives. One such initiative is the UN-backed Sharjah Prize for Arab Culture, which has been awarded annually since 2003. Set up by Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohamed Al-Qassimi of the Emirate of Sharjah, the prize recognizes exceptional work in promoting and developing Arab culture throughout the world.

Over the years, the infamous French “Spiderman” daredevil has risked life, limb and imprisonment to conquer some of the world’s tallest towers. The 47-year old Frenchman has scaled an impressive list of historical buildings including, the Sears Tower, the Empire State Building and Taipei 101.
Saudi Arabia is clamping down ... on jazzercise. The Kingdom shut down an all-women’s fitness center attached to a Jeddah hospital this week. Apparently, the government forbids the establishment of women’s fitness centers, condemning women to a future of love-handles and high blood pressure. The demand for such centers is understandably high, so several women’s wellness clubs have opened under the radar. According to news reports, the government has recently shut down two similar women’s gyms in other locations.

From 1981 to 1988, it was a crime to even play the game of chess in public or sell chess paraphernalia. It took no less than a fatwa from none other than the less than frisky Ayatollah Khomeni to lift the chess ban in the late 80s.

Take Indonesia, for instance, where a small group of clerics in East Java recently issued a fatwa that girls should not chemically straighten their hair. Curly-haired girls are always so much better-behaved.)

I recall a particular instance when I maligned an anti-Muslim Minnesota politician by juxtaposing her image with that of a Troll Doll. But it’s not my fault.
My inner feminist is confused. As elan reported last week, Kuwait has just introduced a new ladies-only taxi service. The Pepto-Bismol pink cars are driven exclusively by women and only accept female customers, catering to Kuwaiti women who are sick of being harassed on the streets by male drivers. Many of the pink taxis come equipped with mirrors and magazines, so ladies can read how best to apply their lip gloss and practice while they are on the go. (If you can’t tell, I think this aspect of the taxi service is slightly moronic).
