Everything that glitters, whirs, whizzes or just plain looks “purty” can be found on the website Etsy. For those of you not fully acquainted with the intricacies of turning a ragged old sweater into a loveable “upcycled” teddy bear or just how divine a juicy red apple looks in its very own hand knitted jacket, Etsy is a website to be reckoned with!
Back in 2005 Etsy guru Rob Kalin spearheaded a handmade revolution based on a categorical rejection of all commercially mass-produced and factory spewed products. Thus, Etsy was born and it truly is a paradise of all things handmade. Best of all there are a number of Muslim-owned, operated and inspired shops on Etsy.
Check out these most awesome Muslim Etsy shops and get inspired to join the ‘Handmade Revolution’ yourself!
1. TheCreativeCaravan.etsy.com - Talk about creative! This Etsy shop offers up some funky skinny scarves sure to add just the right touch of pizzazz to your Islamically-correct outfit. The seller even includes a “Nazar”, or Turkish bead that supposedly wards off the evil eye...freebies that ward off evil are always a GOOD thing.
2. Waafia.etsy.com - “Delectable” is the best word to describe Waafia, an Etsy shop that provides all the accessories for the coolest of cool Muslims. Buttons, magnets and stationary are just a few of the Muslim themed items up for grabs. My personal favorite: A badge-style button saying, “Beards They Grow On You.”
3. ArtWark.etsy.com - Bling and more of it can be found at the trendy Art Wark Etsy shop. Based in New York, Art Wark serves up some gorgeous necklaces, earrings and bracelets. Of course, my fave is the 24K gold vermeil Ka’bah necklace.
4. soukcollective.etsy.com - Expensive artwork and handmade brooches are the daily scoop at Souk Collective, which is also planning to offer funky Islamic photography in the near future.
5. muslamb.etsy.com - Muslim inspired t-shirts and hand pressed paper products are just a couple of the creations by Muslamb. Protect your prayers with their “Salat in Progress” door hanger.
6. CoveredLadiesDesigns.etsy.com - Kick your modesty into high gear with handmade hijabs from Covered Ladies Designs. With a variety of colors and styles to choose from, you’re sure to keep up with all the latest headwear trends.
7. ethnicexpressions14.etsy.com - Snazzy hijab pins and custom jewelry from Ethnic Expressions can make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. A visit to this shop is kind of like perusing a candy store with all of the colors of the rainbow on wanton display.
8. soumayyahstoybox.etsy.com - Scoop up some handmade plush toys and designers kid’s clothes at Soumayyah’s Toybox. The “Google” doll is especially fierce (and faceless, which is an Islamic good thing).
9. tezhip.etsy.com - For hand painted Islamic-inspired artwork, Tezhip provides traditional Turkish artwork to dress up all the walls in your home. But since their located in Turkey you might have to wait a couple of weeks before you hammer that nail into the wall.
10. badraboutique.etsy.com - Khimars, abayas, hijabs and thobes are what make Badra Boutique so footloose and fancy-free. Get you credit card ready because you’ll want just about everything to spruce up your wardrobe.
