Clamping Down on “Sorcery” Inside the Kingdom

What’s wrong with chewing on glass or swallowing a couple a bursts of flaming fire? For Saudi Arabian entertainer Maher al-Luqman, it’s just another day at the ‘office’. He has made a career out of performing death-defying feats in front of a live audience. Al-Luqman along with twelve other performers make up “Luqman’s Altineen”. The group of entertainers travels throughout the kingdom looking for opportunities to perform on stage.
However thanks to the stringent brand of Sunni Islam prevalent in Saudi Arabia, which is enforced by an all too eager religious police wielding sharp sticks, those opportunities are few and far between. The Saudi Arabian government adheres to a strict brand of Islam that punishes any type of magic or sorcery with the full force of the law. In a recent interview, al-Luqman said, “They have stopped us for two years, branding us as sorcerers, and calling for people to fight us and report us.”
Al-Luqman has found the “The Man” dogging his every move and fears that he will be hauled off to a government-sponsored dungeon any time he practices his chosen art form. His troupe recently got permission to perform a show on the outskirts of a small desert town in the kingdom. But before he could even jam a flaming rod down his throat or dance on a pile of glass shards, the religious police came banging on the stage to put an end to the insanity. Al-Luqman is disheartened but vows to forge on bringing his weird and wacky talents to any one wild enough to watch!
