Just what we need in the Muslim world, another great American export...yes thats right, Martha Stewart is spreading her cookie baking ways to our people.
Homemaker extraordinaire, Martha Stewart, has made her way to the Middle East. Beginning to expand her magazine publishing empire in countries such as Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Egypt, and Syria, Stewart is hoping to tap into an entirely new market. The Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia has been pursuing the international market for sometime now, spreading tips and tools for managing and creating organized and sophisticated homes and lifestyles. The launch of their UK edition of the publication allowed the company to prepare for taking on even larger areas of the world. Soon, Martha Stewart living will also be publishing “Everyday Food” and “Martha Stewart Weddings” in Dubai this year.
Making moves to the Middle East will pose quite the challenge for Ms. Stewart, as this part of the world has unique traditions, etiquette, and a drastically varied idea of what is socially acceptable and unacceptable. Will she be able to handle the hearty burps after large dinners, finger licking throughout meals, and most challenging of all, will Stewart be able to turn gold into a “cozy color”?
On the other hand, is the Arab world ready for snicker-doodles, red gingham table cloths (not to be confused with the male head dress), and eating without their elbows on the table?
Perhaps a hybrid between the two is necessary to ensure success, but it’s skeptical. But one thing we can be certain of, every kitchen will be equipped with her state of the art, baklava cutters.
