Emirati Doctor Aims to Bring Her Knowledge Home

Dr Fatima Al DhaheriDr Fatima Al Dhaheri, a 26-year-old Emirati, has a dream: to use the knowledge and experience she gains from her internship with an American children’s hospital to improve pediatric medicine back in the UAE.

“That is my ultimate goal,” said Dr Al Dhaheri, who last year became the second UAE national to join a program at the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington.

“I left the UAE as a teaching assistant in UAE University and I’m hoping one day to come back as a faculty and improve the academic as well as clinical practice aspects of pediatrics in my home country.”

She has learned more than just clinical techniques during the first seven months of her three-year residency.

“I’ve quickly learned that I’m more resilient than I thought I was!” said Dr Al Dhaheri, a graduate of UAE University’s College Of Medicine and Health Sciences. “I couldn’t have imagined pulling through half the things I’ve experienced. I’ve learned that there is nothing more inspiring than a parent taking care of a sick child.
