Cinema that paid a tribute to women’s empowerment

Gulaab gang

Great films, with strong female characters, have been made in Bollywood for a long time now. In the 80s, actresses like Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi and Deepti Naval made a mark by fearlessly accepting unconventional roles. The latest example of the trend is the upcoming Gulaab Gang, which will see Madhuri Dixit-Nene pitted against Juhi Chawla in a reel face-off.

While Madhuri plays the fearless Rajjo, who is a crusader for women’s rights, Juhi will be seen as Sumitra Devi, a conniving and ruthless politician. Produced by Anubhav Sinha and associate producer Mushtaq Shiekh, the film, directed by Soumik Sen, is slated for release over the Women’s Day weekend. We take you down memory lane, listing some of Bollywood’s iconic women-centric roles.
