Book-Swap Aims to Get Young Emiratis Reading

We live in a fast-paced world where information and entertainment are just a click away. You can read newspaper and magazine articles on your mobile phone, and whole books on your Kindle or iPad, and even browse your favorite restaurant menu online.

But father-of-three Faisal Mohammed fears that an obsession with electronic devices is making the younger generation lazy and less likely to read in-depth about subjects that really matter, like science, history and culture.f

He believes the answer is encouraging young Emiratis to spend a bit less time on their smartphones and discover the joys of reading paperback books. Reading books, he says, is the best way to “develop the mind” and “stimulate the process of thinking”.

So the 38-year-old has set up two mobile book-swap kiosks on Ras Al Khaimah’s Corniche, in the hopes of promoting the benefits of reading.

We caught up with Faisal to find out more.

What is the idea behind the book-swap kiosk?

It is simply the idea of books being swapped; sharing with other community members the books you own, whether they’re lifestyle or scientific texts, and acquiring what you want, from cultural books to literary classics, and in various languages as well. The idea is based on the principle of encouraging reading, as well as encouraging children and adults alike to acquire useful books. I believe young people are missing the thrill of reading useful cultural, historical and scientific books.
